Mobile application hardening methods obfuscate application code. Obfuscation makes it much more difficult for attackers to review the code and analyze the application. Application shielding provides protection for an organization's software-based assets from tampering, reverse engineering, and attacks on the application in untrusted environments.
Examples of code obfuscation:
- Renaming symbol key components of the code
- Putting blocks of code in an irrational sequence
- Encrypting strings and removing unused symbols from binaries (binary code, as opposed to interpreted code, is obfuscated more effectively).
- Anti-debug capabilities can be inserted to identify the presence of a debugger, which is one of the tools hackers use when conducting reverse engineering.
